KOLKATA: Mohammedan Sporting Club U-17s edged Mohun Bagan 7-6 via sudden death after a scoreless 120 minutes at Mohun Bagan Ground to win the Sailen Manna Memorial U-17 Football Tournament.
Comprised of boys from the Club’s Youth Development Programme, the Under-17 team logged three consecutive wins to clinch the title on Saturday.
The competition, which was organised by the Kalighat Sports Lovers Association, played over two days saw Mohammedan SC U-17s begin their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Durbar Sports Academy in the quarterfinals on Friday. The following day they logged a similar 1-0 win over East Bengal in the semis to make it to the big final.
Up against Mohun Bagan in the title decider, the youngsters from the Mohammedan SC Youth Development Programme outplayed their Kolkata counterparts, but in a match featuring plenty of effort and endeavour, the defences enjoyed the ascendancy to ensure both teams tied at goalless after normal time. The teams failed to break the deadlock even in extra time requiring penalties to separate the sides and Mohammedan SC colts proved to be better shooters to prevail 7-6.
